Interview: Urgent help is needed because the survivors of the Myanmar earthquake conflict amid a long -term crisis

The United Nations Food Program (WFP) quickly launched relief operations, but the ongoing conflict and deficiency is serious challenges.

Speaking of Mandalay, near the earthquake center, Michael Danford, WFP rural manager, described the destruction as an overwhelming.

“While driving your car on the streets, you can only see very quickly to the effect of this terrible earthquake … you hear terrible stories that really talk about the need to respond to the international community and respond quickly.”

With food, shelter and medical assistance in the number of show points, the World Food Program and other agencies call for immediate financing to maintain relief efforts.

“Without financing, we cannot do what we need to do … we cannot meet the needs of the Myanmar population.” Mr. Donford caution.

In an interview with the United Nations Company, he detailed the tremendous challenges facing survivors and relief workers, the impact of the ongoing conflict and why urgent global measures need to prevent more tragedy.

Michael Danford, a rural manager in Myanmar, is speaking to the media in NiB Tao, with the devastating Autara Thuiri Hospital in the background.

United Nations News: You are now in Mandalay, which is located near the devastating earthquake center on Friday. Can you describe what you see now and hear from people there?

Michael Danford: What I see is destruction. I was actually very on Friday when the earthquake hit. It was a terrifying experience. We have ended under a table, in desperate hope that the ceiling would not back away from us. Immediately after that, we cleared the building. We started thinking about how to respond to the needs of the Myanmar people.

The WFP program started our first distributions in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital, two days ago, within 48 hours of the earthquake itself. Today, I led from Nay Pyi Taw first to Sagaing City, which was the actual earthquake center, and now I am in Mandalay, which may be the second largest city and the city that had the largest impact of the earthquake itself.

While your car is driving in the streets, you see very quickly the effect of this terrible earthquake … you hear terrible stories that talk about the need to respond to the international community and respond quickly to it

United Nations News: I traveled across the epic today as I said. How did you see the situation there?

Mr. Danford: Look, while you are driving in the streets, you can only see very quickly for the effect of this terrible terrible earthquake. The buildings are broken, the infrastructure is broken, reaching the nutrition sites and meeting the beneficiaries, corresponding to the people who were affected and heard their stories, and they are destroyed.

Today, the sports food program was nourishing the survivors of a mosque that shattered – rivers – many people lost their loved ones, and the World Food Program provided basic support to those who lost their breadwinner. Fold stories to hear them and really talk about the need for the international community to respond and respond quickly and to refrain generously.

United Nations News: There were many tremors after Friday. Have you caused additional damage or hindered your efforts?

Mr. Dunford: I was already at the Distribution point this afternoon, perhaps around 5 o'clock, and there was a tremor. Immediately, people rushed for safety and went down to the ground. Fortunately, it wasn't too severe, but you can feel everyone on the edge of the abyss.

We understand that there are two rivers in Mandalay last night. After two days of the first earthquake, people returned to hotels, and with these additional tremors, deaths are still taking place.

Many people are still sleeping in the streets or in the gardens because they are afraid to return to their homes. Of course, this impedes our efforts to reach it and provide the type of support they need.

United Nations News: For your immediate response, what are the main priorities?

Mr. Danford: From the program of the program, of course, is food and nutrition. We are also preparing for the logistical group between agencies, and we look forward to knowing if we also need to activate the emergency communication group. In addition, an urgent need for health and washing (water and sanitation) and of course shelter.

United Nations News: What about the other actors who participated in the response? Are there other international agencies on the ground, local partners?

Mr. Danford: Certainly, we are now sharing joint offices with the likes of UNICEF (the United Nations Fund for Children) and Commission Commission (United Nations High Commissioner for the United Nations), who (the World Health Organization) and Osha (Humanitarian Coordination Office).

We are working with national and local NGOs because they know the context, and they know the environment and know – most importantly – the people we support

Many NGOs (NGOs) are also filled, especially national and local NGOs, so we work with them, of course, they know the context, and they know the environment and know-most importantly-the people we support.

It is really a complete effort to respond. It is a difficult situation. You have to remember that even before this crisis, Myanmar has already a state in a crisis. At the beginning of the year, we estimated that more than 19 million people needed humanitarian assistance, more than 15 million hungry, and another 3.5 million people were internally homeless.

United Nations News: Talking about the conflict. How does the conflict that affects the delivery of aid affects, especially in remote areas or the disputed areas between the various armed groups?

Mr. Donford: First of all, the conflict made this country very weak. As I mentioned, the human needs are great. And it continues to make our work very difficult.

There were ways to ask the authorities, first of all, the end of the conflict, at least the ceasefire during this period when we all need to respond. We ask for human access without obstacles. We need to be able to reach the affected population, conduct assessments, and to release our response quickly.

United Nations News: Even before this disaster, the World Food Program and other agencies were already struggling with financing issues. Now, with the expansion of the United States and other donors, how much do you expect on relief efforts, and what does this mean for a long -term response?

Mr. Danford: Well, without financing, we cannot do what we have to do. Without financing, we cannot meet the needs of the Myanmar people.

In fact, the meeting I was holding at the time of the earthquake on Friday was looking at our financing mode, and how we would have to expand our operations and even the effects of our employees.

Without financing, we cannot do what we need to do … We cannot meet the needs of the Myanmar people

United Nations News: We talked about the affected societies and your response. What about the United Nations employees, especially national employees in Myanmar? Are you affected by this?

Mr. Danford: Fortunately, from the program's perspective, no one was seriously injured and as far as I did not know, there were no members of the direct family. This is a great relief. Shortly after dinner, I was saying how destructive it was if we lost someone from our team.

But many people in Myanmar were not so fortunate. There are thousands who saddened the missing family members. The current estimated number of deaths is approximately 3000, but some are afraid to rise to 10,000.

And behind each of these numbers, there is a story. Behind every story, there are family members who left behind. This is a terrible tragedy – in addition to the tragedy that Myanmar has carried over the past four years.
