The death toll in Myanmar continues to rise after the earthquake – DW – 01/04/2025

The Military Council in Myanmar said on Tuesday that the death toll from an earthquake on Friday had now reached at least 2719 people with more than 4,500 missing people and hundreds of others. The death toll is widely expected to rise dramatically.

The deputy head of the mission at the German embassy in Yangon, Bianca Drojush, said that the number of deaths would be much higher than it is currently.

“The real death toll is likely to be much higher, in a place between 10,000 and 100,000, according to estimates in Mandalay alone,” said Dougosh.

The survivors are still rescued

The last reported deaths come at a time when the search and rescue teams continue to withdraw the survivors from under the rubble.

In the Myanmar capital, NayPyitaw is 168 miles (270 km) south of Mandalai – near the earthquake center – the local firefighting administration managed to save a besieged woman in the rubble.

The rescue of the 63 -year -old girl came 91 hours after her burial when the building in which she was collapsed.

In search and rescue, the chances of finding survivors are reduced after 72 hours.

Large parts of Myanmar were affected

Most of the reports that come out of Myanmar are from Mandalay, the second largest city, and NayPyitaw-but a large group of the country has been affected. Many areas remain without strength and connections, which means that the full range of loss and damage is not yet known.

“The needs are enormous, and they rise in the hour,” said Julia Reese, UNICEF's representative in Myanmar.

“The response window to save life is closed,” added Re. “Through the affected areas, families face a severe shortage of clean water, food and medical supplies.”

The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Coordination (OCA) said that local search and rescue teams are supported by international slaves, including China, India, Russia, Thailand and Bangladesh, “intensifying their efforts” with a special focus in the central part of the country where the United Nations said in the scourge of the title.

Even before the earthquake, more than 3 million people have been forced into their homes by the civil war in Myanmar with more than 20 million people in the needy, according to the United Nations.

The rebel coalition announces the ceasefire

Amnesty International calls on the Military Council to stop the attacks

Meanwhile, Amnesty International called on the Military Council to refrain from deliberate attacks on civilian targets in areas affected by the earthquake last week.

“The Myanmar Army, along with all other actors participating in earthquake's relief efforts, must respect the principles of human rights and that the humanitarian needs of the survivors are the utmost priority,” said Joe Freeman, a researcher at Myanmar, an Amnesty International researcher.

“You cannot ask for help with one hand and bombing with the other. Air strikes and attack civilians in the same area that the earthquake hit is inhuman and shows a flagrant disregard for human rights,” said Freeman.
