The ruling army declares a temporary ceasefire

The Myanmar Army announced a temporary ceasefire to accelerate relief and reconstruction efforts after the devastating earthquake last week.

In a statement, the ruling state board of state in the Military Council said that the deal will be in effect from April 2 to April 22.

Earlier this week, rebel groups fighting the army unilaterally announced the ceasefire to support relief efforts – the army refused to do the same until Wednesday's announcement.

It is now known that 2,886 people were killed after an earthquake of 7.7 on Friday. Hundreds of people are still missing.

The earthquake also felt hundreds of miles away in neighboring countries like Thailand, where the death toll is currently 21.

Myanmar was grabbed violence amid a civil war between the Military Council – which seized power in the 2021 coup – and the ethnic militias and the resistance forces throughout the country.

On Tuesday night, the Myanmar army opened fire in the Chinese Red Cross convoy carrying relief supplies from the earthquake.

The National Liberation Army, TA'ANG, an armed rebel group, said that the military forces shot a convoy of nine vehicles with a machine gun in the eastern Shan state.

The convoy was on its way to Mandalay, the difficult city near the earthquake center. No injuries were reported.

The military council, which he said, was investigating the accident, denied the shooting directly on the vehicles. She said that the forces launched the bullets in the air after the convoy did not stop, although it was indicated.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that its rescue team and its supplies were safe, adding that “all factions and parties in Myanmar will give earthquake efforts.”

The Myanmar Humanitarian crisis increased significantly after an earthquake last week. It is believed that the actual death number is much higher than the official numbers provided by the Military Council.

Several international relief agencies and foreign governments have sent employees and supplies to the areas damaged by the earthquake.

A military spokesman said on Wednesday that the forces witnessed the relief convoy coming from the town of Nongzhou on Tuesday night, with vehicles wearing Chinese stickers and Myanmar numbers panels, but they were not previously given in the movement of vehicles.

“When we saw the convoy, we stopped it. But they continued. We opened the fire from about 200 meters, but they did not stop,” he said.

“About 100 meters, we fired three shots in the air, after which the vehicles returned towards Naungcho.”

The spokesman said that the China's rescue team in China, which was providing rescue support in Mandalay, had received a security cover when they traveled through this road.

He added that when international agencies want to provide assistance, they need to inform the Myanmar government.
