DAW Soe Soe witnessed the 7.7 -year -old earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The earthquake center was near Mandalay, the second largest city in the country, where Dow lives with her husband and seven children. “I saw about seventeen people buried under the rubble, and we were unable to do anything to help them,” she told Zoa, a member of the integrated coalition – a global alliance that includes global relief – which is currently responding to the crisis.

An estimated 54 million people were affected by the earthquake.

The disaster has already claimed more than 3,600 people and wounded 5000. This caused severe damage to the interior airports and infrastructure, with hundreds of buildings collapsed across the center of Myanmar. The tremors felt the amount of Thailand, China and the final shakes of different severity, which increased the damage and delaying relief efforts.

This catastrophe was struck amid a long civil war that has been going on since 2021, which made response efforts more challenging alone. Mandalaay, in central Myanmar, hosts more than 1.6 million people of internally displaced people (IDPS) who have already fled violence. The last earthquake uprooted many again, the destruction of displacement escalated, the shortage of food was exacerbated and increased the risk of disease outbreaks in a country already in a crisis.
