A ceremony was held in the center of San Francisco early on Friday morning to celebrate 119 years since most of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906 that followed.

At a ceremony that started before four in the morning, people gathered at the Lota Fountain in the streets of Market and Kirney, which became a place for gathering after the disaster. The leaders of the city and others, some of them in the fashion of the period, were attending.

At 5:12 am, the engine alarm sirens were turned off, representing the exact moment of the 7.9 -size earthquake. The earthquake and fire killed more than 3000 people and destroyed more than 80 % of the city.

Mayor Daniel Lori talked about the city's flexibility after the disaster.

“This event, this celebration, gives me hope and inspiration only,” he said. “We must all have this optimism that they had after this disaster, because they restored it. We will return San Francisco again.”

Lori also thanked the first respondents for preparing for disasters in the city.

“We know that another earthquake can strike at any moment. I know that our first respondents are preparing every day,” the mayor said. “We are ready and continue to prepare ourselves for anything that comes after that.”

In the past years, the survivors of the earthquake have been part of the ceremony. William del Monte, the last known surgeon of the earthquake, died in 2016 at the age of 109.
