CERT is looking for more applicants for the September internship at Wilmar

WILLMAR – The Wilmar Police Department is looking for more recruits for September training for community emergency response team members.

CERT is a program established in 2018 that seeks to train community members in emergency preparedness, first aid, use of fire extinguishers, and search and rescue. Training is provided by Wilmar Police Department, Wilmar Fire Department, CentraCare EMS, Kandyuhe County Rescue Squad and Kandyohe County Emergency Department.

Training will begin in the first week in September, but Wilmar Police Chief Jim Felt said he hopes to have people registered by August 26 to fully process applicants.

Each class consists of 20 training hours divided into two and a half hours per week for two months.

“We aim to make the training informative and fun, with lots of hands-on activities,” writes Felt by email. “At the end of the training, we have some small scenarios where students can test their skills.”

About 34 people have undergone the program and can sign up to be part of the CERT team where they are issued equipment such as a safety vest, helmet, and first aid supplies. Those who choose to be part of the team are put on a list to be called up to special events or local emergencies. Participants also have the option to take a class to get general information.

CERT is a national program that was started by the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985 after the department assisted in the Mexico City earthquake that year. Of the 30,000 people injured during the earthquake, most were rescued by other citizens and about 600 rescuers died.

LAFD started the Citizen Emergency Response Training Program and later FEMA approved the program to standardize training.
