Safer walking and cycling crucial for road safety and better health

Despite their benefits, less than one -third of countries have national policies to promote walking and cycling. WHO's new tool aims to fill this gap with practical instructions based on evidence for policy creators, urban planners, health advocates and civil society. Toolkit calls for bold action including:
- integrating walking and cycling into traffic, health, environmental and educational policies;
- construction of safe infrastructure such as sidewalks, transitions and protected cycles;
- installation and conducting safer speed limit aligned with the best global practices;
- promoting safe use of roads through campaigns for public awareness and behavior changes; and
- Using financial incentives to encourage active mobility.
While the death of global pedestrians fell slightly and the cycling death placed between 2011 and 2021, regional trends show a growing danger:
- In the Who Southeast Asia region, the death of pedestrians increased by 42%.
- In the European region, the death of cyclists increased by 50%.
- In the Western Pacific Ocean region, the death of a cyclist increased by 88%.
This week, which joins hundreds of organizations and governments around the world to require urgent road safety measures. The global association of non -governmental road safety organizations mobilize more than 400 members of members in 100 countries to support the campaign.
