The response to the devastating earthquake in Myanmar is driven by solidarity and dedication – Myanmar

On March 28, an earthquake measured 7.7 in the middle of Myanmar. From the earthquake center in the city of SAGAING, the tremors in Thailand, Bangladesh, China and Laos felt. Our teams in the country have already mobilized immediately to travel to the affected areas of the epic, and for the Mandalay, NayPyitaw, and Southern Shaan to assess the initial needs, while our emergency teams are ready to reach Myanmar as early as possible.

Jessa Ponteldra, emergency coordinator based in Southeast Asia, was one of them. She shares her experiences from the first week of emergency response in Myanmar.

E landed in Yangon in the middle of the night on April 1 and went directly to the Médecins Sans Frontières office (MSF) for the surroundings. After a few hours of rest, we set out the next morning on a long trip for 6.5 hours to NayPyitaw, especially along the highway to join the team that already went there on March 30.

But about 100 km from the city, we started to see the effect of the earthquake – the cracks on the road, which is a flagrant reminder of the disaster. We entered this well -designed city, the capital of Myanmar, and we entered a hotel, where some of the displaced families that could have been tolerated.

In the evening, we met the rest of the emergency team to set goals for the coming days. As a medical coordinator, my role is to evaluate the health situation: evaluating both the medical facilities and urgent needs of the injured people.

Motherhood suite in the jewelry museum

Before the earthquake, NayPyidawdaw boasted with major medical institutions: a hospital of 1000 families, a 500 -bed hospital, a 500 -bed orthopedic hospital, 500 families hospital, and more. However, all of these large specialized hospitals cannot work at full capacity due to the structural damage of the facilities.

One of the most surprising examples of adaptation was to reuse 500-bed hospital. Patients, employees and some equipment were transferred to a special unprecedented jewelry museum that the earthquake was not touched. The owner, who is eager to help, welcomed the motherhood in his building and his vehicle. The museum, which was originally intended to be an upscale tourist attraction, became a health care space in emergency situations. Inside the major rooms, there were rows and rows of the family prepared for pregnant women about to give birth.

The mineral detection device at the entrance was a sorting point, with more interior offices used for previous birth and post -birth. Other rooms were converted into emergency wings, and the theater of operations already performed caesarean section. The employees, who were themselves, created a tents for sleeping in the complex, as well as the families of patients. A brick building was used in the back of the complex that looks like a train station, such as management offices and kitchen for employees.

I saw a lot of solidarity and dedication

There, I met the hospital supervisor, who took enough time to talk to us despite the difficult situation. Amid the feverish environment, she was still smiling. The families of the employees and patients were sharing the place, sharing meals, making donations to the needy, and supporting each other … it works as a large community. Everyone was dealing with the best they could … collectively.

A children's hospital was originally transferred from 500 other beds, all over the city and was now working as a 32-bed-of-town hospital for any operating theater. Looking at the needs of society-pregnant women who are born, and children are injured even amid a natural disaster-a 500-bed hospital to become a 32-bed hospital, mathematics have not been added.

The meeting with the supervisor in this facility, for depth. Healthcare professionals were very dedicated, and they were trying their best. The spirit of society was everywhere and the gathering together was really echoing with me because I am Southeast Asia, and this is a large part of our culture. They gathered in times of needs … they also appreciated that MSF with this emergency.

Many people suffer from homelessness in an urban space

Five days later, she left naypyidaw, and took the old highway instead of the highway. As we approached the city of Mandalay, we saw temporary shelters of plastic covers on one side of the road, and perhaps 1000 people. On the other side, the buildings are located in rubble. In the following days, as we move all over the city to evaluate hospitals, we have seen similar damages – collapsed houses and societies in chaos. Many affected people were completely weak, without access to water and sanitation, and they lack the basic requirements to maintain their dignity.

In Mandalay, the families who chose to stay close to their damaged or collapsed homes resided in gates or front courtyard, or along the street – some of which were returning to their damaged homes, risk more injuries just to reach basic facilities such as bathrooms. Hospitals were partially functional and able to join the wounded – although they often outside the outside were barely protected from the elements by simple hemp fabric.

During these assessments, our teams were already providing basic health consultations, psychological first aid for affected societies and basic elements distributed such as cleaning groups in cooperation with local civil society organizations. Logistics teams work tirelessly to restore water and sewage facilities, and to create toilets in the monasteries as many displaced families resorted to.

More challenges may come

As the rainy season approaches, challenges escalate. The situation may become increasingly unstable. If thousands of people suffer from homeless people in urban areas, and with the risk of disease outbreaks, the response to their needs will be an incredible challenge.

What I saw in Naybyidaw to my essence as a public health professional, but what I saw in Mandalay did not touch his essence as human.

Currently, societies find ways to support each other. I remember that one of the spouses resides in the same hotel in NayPyidaw, and I met when I was outside on the usual running. They were also doing their morning exercises. The man's birthday was that day. But given the situation, the celebration will not be a party. He said: “We have lost our house too, but we work a little more, so we want to return the favor.” They did this by doing food, water and basic materials in one of the most affected neighborhoods in Naypyidaw.

I also into consideration this doctor met. It was from a less damaged town that collected a group of healthcare colleagues to create a free clinic. Soon they started receiving donations from people outside – food, basic things, and more. This spirit of society in Myanmar is strong, but I can only wonder: How long can it continue?

Our emergency teams continue to work around the clock, which measures the needs and expecting them, and supporting relief efforts wherever possible with the societies that operate. The recovery of this huge earthquake will be long for people affected, regardless of where they live, and they need to reach life -saving humanitarian assistance.
