Strong earthquake hits Philippines

Seismologists said that a strong earthquake with the initial magnitude of 6.7 occurred near the coast of Samar Province in the Philippines. The earthquake was felt widely, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The earthquake struck at 8:03 a.m. local time on Tuesday, and its epicenter was near Tagapul An in the Samar Sea, about 52 km northwest of the city of Calpayuj and 60 km southeast of the city of Masbate.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the initial earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7. It hit about 10 kilometers below the sea floor, making it a very shallow earthquake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) put the volume slightly lower, at 6.5, but said the depth was only a kilometer. She said damages and aftershocks were likely.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement: “Based on all available data, there is no risk of a tsunami from this earthquake.” There were no immediate details of the damage or injuries.

People felt earthquakes all over the area, and some people said the tremor was strong enough to wake them up. “Very strong, it lasts for several seconds,” one person in Legaspi told EMSC.

Computer models from the US Geological Survey estimate that as many as 41.4 million people may have felt the earthquake, including 446,000 people who may have felt the tremor “strong” to “very strong”. According to the USGS, the risk of serious damage or injury is low.
