A strong earthquake abroad in Cairo and Alexandria

An earthquake of 6.4 people in the Mediterranean was recorded early Wednesday morning, which led to conclusions across parts of Egypt, including Cairo and Alexandria. The earthquake occurred at 1:51 am Cairo time, about 421 km north of Marsa Maturah, according to the National Institute for Research in Egypt, Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).

Residents in many Egyptian cities, especially in the capital and along the northern coast, have reported their feeling of shaking. Despite the distance of the earthquake center from the coastal line in Egypt, the tremors were perceived by local geological conditions.

NRIAG explained that no victims or material damage were reported as a result of the earthquake.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the European Medium Earthquake Center (EMSC) assessed the earthquake size slightly lower at 6.1, where its center was located about 38 km southwest of Carbathos, Greece. The German Earth Science Research Center (GFZ) also recorded a similar event, giving a volume of 6.3 from Crete at a depth of 83 km.

According to AHERAM Online, Dr. Sherif Al -Haddi, head of the earthquake seismology department in NRIAG, explained that the soil of soft clay in Cairo contributed to the remarkable shake that the population feels, as the soil types tend to amplify seismic waves.

Seismic activity in the eastern Mediterranean is not uncommon due to the complex tectonic boundaries in the region. The Egyptian authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
