A strong earthquake hits central Philippines, damaging homes

A powerful earthquake struck the central Philippines on Tuesday, trapping a family in a collapsed house, damaging other homes and a port and prompting people to set out in the open air in search of safety.

Roads were paved in Katangan, the coastal city closest to the epicenter, according to Reno Rivalo, a regional official in Masbate, and preliminary photos of the quake.

Rivalo told ABS-CBN that a three-story house collapsed in Katangan as the ground shook and trapped a retired police officer and his family. He said rescuers rushed to save them.

“People should avoid returning immediately to the damaged buildings,” he said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Katangan at a depth of about 21 kilometers (13 miles).

There is no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake, which was triggered by movement in the Philippine fault, said Renato Solidum, who heads the government institute. The earthquake was felt in several provinces in the central Visayas region.

The Philippines is located in the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, which is an arc of faults around the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur. It is also hit by about 20 hurricanes and storms every year, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries.

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale killed nearly 2,000 people in the northern Philippines in 1990.
