A 6.7-magnitude earthquake strikes central Philippines, and aftershocks are expected

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake has been reported in the central Philippines.

The major earthquake hit Masbat governorate at 8:03 am local time on Tuesday.

The epicenter was shallow at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

No tsunami warnings were issued.

At 8:23 am, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported aftershocks of 3.8 magnitude. The institute said damage and other aftershocks were expected.

Phivolcs has also issued a reminder that “Alert Level 1” remains in effect in areas around Taal Volcano in Batangas province, 100 kilometers south of Metro Manila, which has experienced five earthquakes in the past 24 hours.

The Level 1 alert warns of “sudden steam-driven or high-explosive explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ash, lethal accumulations or volcanic gas expulsions” that could occur and threaten areas around the volcanic island.

The institute “strongly recommends” entry to risk areas around the volcano “must remain strictly prohibited,” according to the notice.
