Volcano Watch is a weekly update and an article written by scholars and scholars of the Hawaiian volcano. Today's article by the geophysic world of RCUH Madi Hook.

Watching a volcanic eruption is, for many, one -age experience. The Hawaiian National Park welcomes more than a million visitors from all over the world every year, and many of these visitors hope to see lava erupts personally. And as much as each episode of the episode of revolutions, experts at the Hawaiian Pillar Observatory are watching what is happening between the episodes.

For the residents of Hawaii, the last episodes of Kaluapele (Summit Caldera in Kīlauea) offer many opportunities to display charming lava fountains. Unlike the recent explosion sites such as the East or southwest of Kīlauea, the Summit Caldera revolutions are available to the public. It offers a journey on the edge of the hole in the ride and walking for one mile distance from the best viewing areas near the Keanakākoʻi hole, although other areas along the Caldera edge also provide stunning views of further.

This spectrum shows four hours of the Hawaiian Observatory data flows in Hawaii via six seismic stations at the Kīlauea summit on May 6, 2025. Each plate is 10 minutes of data. For a period of four hours, the earthquake, pulse, and tremors are visible.

Before the start of this eruption in December 2024, the Hawaiian island earthquake reached some of the highest levels in the history recorded here. Only last summer, some weekly returns exceeded 2000 earthquakes throughout the island. Some of these earthquakes are the magma that creates new paths in the volcano, breaking rocks along the way. When the magma erupts, this rock break stops, and the crime census diminish as a result. In the past five months, the number of the weekly earthquake of Hawaiian island has rarely exceeded 500.

Although there are not many earthquakes around the Kīlauea top during the ongoing explosion, the ground below the Kaluapee is not completely calm. During a revolutionary episode, lava fountain roar appears on seismic data channels as an outbreak. It is a fixed and loud signal that is unambiguous through the explosions and is associated with the movement of large liquids. Although the tremor increases with the beginning of each fountain, it did not completely disappear with every temporary stop. The signal continues between the episodes. Modern stops showed periods of low periodic frequency pulses inside the tremor, which are often associated with the height and fall of lava in the ventilation opening. This process of lava that fills the holes, then drain, over and over again, before a new episode was visible volcanic volcanic cameras in Hawaii.

The vibrant tremor can indicate the movement of magma and/or the transfer of gas within the volcanic system, and a diversity of rhythm, duration and intensity. One example is the course that led to Eruptive Episode 20. The pulse began seriously about nine hours before the lava fountain appeared on May 6, before 5:30 pm. Each pulse lasted for about 3 minutes, at a rate of about 8 pulses per hour.

However, the temporary suspension between the 17 and 18 episodes displays pulses that were closer to 10 minutes, with only 2-3 every hour. Although the pulse is common directly before or after a dual ring, it is inconsistent. Unlike the beginning of episode 20, episode 19 started without directly preceding the pulse of the tremor. Also, we cannot assume that the pulse stops during the pop -up rings, as the loud tremor will cover any weaker signals.

Identification of seismic patterns, or their absence, can contribute to our understanding of what is happening under the surface. Study these patterns along with geodesic data (how the Earth shrinks and expands with volcanic activity), changes in gas emissions, and changes in magma's literature, gives us the best opportunity to understand the complex volcanic system below our feet.

Volcano activity updates

Kīlauea has erupted accidentally inside Summit Caldera since December 23, 2024.

The 22nd episode of the Kīlauea summit in the Halemaʻumaʻu hole on May 16, with about 8 hours of fountain in the first place of the northern ventilation hole. A strong, visible glow in both inflation in the north and south, and the inflation area of the summit since the end of episode 22 indicates that there is another possible episode. Sulfur dioxide rates in the top area are raised during the active explosion rings. No unusual activity was observed along the eastern rift area in Kīlauea or the southwestern rift area.

Mona Lua does not erupt. The volcanic alert level is in a normal position.

The hair of two earthquakes in the Hawaiian Islands was reported last week: the M3.2 earthquake, 13 miles from Hāwī at a depth of 13 miles on May 21 at 2:18 and the M4.2 Ludration 11 miles from Pāhala at a depth of 20 miles on May 20 at 9:37 am.
