6.6 magnitude earthquake hits Philippines; 1 dead

August 18 (UPI) – A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines on Tuesday, killing at least one person, officials said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement that the earthquake occurred at 8:03 a.m. at a depth of 13 miles 4 miles east of Katangan municipality in the central island province of Masbate.

Venus Rojo, a disaster officer in Katangan, confirmed to local media that a retired police officer had died after being trapped under his house, which collapsed in the earthquake.

According to the Philippine Red Cross, several roads were damaged and many buildings collapsed in Masbate due to the earthquake, forcing at least 11 people to seek shelter at Katangan National High School.

The Masbate branch of the Red Cross said in a statement that “psychosocial support continues.”

Phvolcs warned that damage was expected, as were aftershocks.

She said that the “devastating” density effects 7 were felt by Katangan, while the effects of “strong” density 5 echoed in the cities of Masbate as well as Almagro and Tagapulan in Samar Governorate.
