10 years after the earthquake of Kinabalo

Hong Kong CNN –

It has been hanging from a tree for nearly seven hours, Pragish Daant Patel, 11, was barely conscious-at the slow, slow movement of his feet, wearing bright orange shoes, hinting into a trace of life.

Amid the wreckage of the broken rocks launched by a devastating earthquake, a tour guide descended from the mountain when, from the angle of his eye, caught in those bright shoes.

It was this orange flash that led Patel's guide, and in the end saved the life of a student.

10 years have passed since the tragic morning on June 5, 2015, when 29 students and eight teachers from the Tangong Katong Elementary School in Singapore launched what was supposed to be an unforgettable school trip to climb the 13435 -foot Mountain Kinabalu on the island of Borneo, Malaysia.

With the group climbing, a 6.0 -core earthquake hit, causing a ground collapse to buried part of the campaign.

Patel was washed away by a series of rocks and thunder dirt and raised it to a tree.

Seven students and teachers from his group are never. Eighteen people in total lost their lives.

For 21 -year -old Patille, memories are shocking and lost time, such as friends and teachers who lost them on that day. But on the tenth anniversary of the tragedy, he felt ready to reconsider this chapter of his life.

He said, “I always wanted to know what happened, because no one shares it with me.”

He joined his former colleague and survivor colleague, Emyr Uzayr, Patel began a trip to restore the same paths that once tested their boundaries – and healing.

When the Patel and Osire collected to climb on May 20 this year, they were ready – despite the remaining anxiety and fear – to honor friends who did not return home.

The two remained in a kind of mysterious touch after the 2015 disaster, more than just a brief hell on Instagram and the “How if You” messages are widespread.

Although barely speaking over the years, there was one clear thing for both of them: the return to Mount Kinabalo was an incomplete work. They were keen to return and shake ghosts on the tenth anniversary of the earthquake.

To ascend, they did not reunite them with Cornellius Sanan, 43 -year -old Malaysian mountain guide who saved Patel's life 10 years ago.

“Where is your magic shoes?” Sanan CN.

Patel replied: “I wish I had still, but they kept a lot of painful memories, so my parents did not want me to keep them.”

Although bright orange shoes have long been gone, Patel wore a familiar religious necklace around his neck – his lucky charm, which Sanan confessed. The same Patel necklace was wearing on the day of the earthquake.

The group was hoping to complete climbing in two days. But in the early hours of May 21, heavy rains began to fall, forcing them to spend an additional day on the mountain.

What could have been a frustrating delay turned into an opportunity to listen to the stories of the local population who still remember that tragic day, and listening from Sanan himself.

“It has become a joint journey more than a personal trip,” unlike Azire.

The next morning, at 3:30 am, just as the rain diluted, they resumed their climbing through the sharp terrain integrated into Mount Kinabalo.

“It was a physical difficult,” Ozir admitted. “At some point, I wondered – how did we manage this even when we were just children?”

Under a clear sky and with fresh mountain air everywhere, with the rise of Ozir, old memories rose.

“The memories of our friends are back.”

Unlike Patel, Uzayr has remembered everything since that fateful day that began to laugh, which is to raise a long -awaited school journey in the end.

He remembers with a soft smile: “We were just children, we tell each other,” faster! Move faster! ”

It started today only when the Earth began to tremble.

“Show the whole mountain,” he said. “After that, thousands of rocks – some of which are the size of car tires – fell very quickly and very fast.”

The teachers shouted, “Go down! Go down!”

But the rocks fell faster than anyone can interact with.

“I remember the colors of my friends' jackets everywhere, then … the bodies.”

I left the weight covered with cutting, with a broken skull. But he made it alive.

Latel, though; Memories are often lost and spread. Sanan, the mountain guide that he found, is now helping to fill the blanks.

Patel appears the fine tree where it is found, hanging for hours – barely visible.

“We have seen little movement and thought,” Perhaps someone is still alive, “Sanan told CNN.” We made a decision to bring Patel without any appropriate equipment. We just had to try. ”

“If you landed a few meters just a few meters or right, they will not be able to see me. The trees had completely hidden me,” Patel said.

He was seriously injured, physically and emotionally.

He remembers: “I could not talk completely, I couldn't walk, and I couldn't write,” so I had to re -learn how to do everything essential from the beginning. ”

However, the man who pulled Patel of trees has not been trained to rescue at all. Sanan was a mountain guide for only five years, with no previous experience in a natural disaster. But on that day, he assumed instinct.

Sanan also lost a person – his cousin Ruby Sabinggi, a colleague's guide who was leading a Thai tourist when he hit the earthquake. SAPINGI was caught under fallen rocks. Knowing that he will not do that, tell the tourist to continue without him. Another mountain guide, Joseph Solodin, also lost his life on that day.

Sanan still guides today. It is his way to honor the SAPINGI Memory.

He said: “I continue to guide”, because part of my soul lives here (in the Kinabalu Mountain). ”

To Uzayr and Patel, Sanan will always be their hero – the man who saved lives.

But Sanan shakes his head.

He quietly said: “We were all there on that day – evidence, rescuers, everyone. No one did it alone.” “We were all heroes, in our own way.”

Since then, tracks have been rebuilt on Kinabalu Mountain. The allocated rescue team stands ready every day.

Safety has changed, but the mountain did not. High in those summits, memories of 2015 still live.

“In everything we do now, we carry their memories,” Ozir said. “We have repeated what our friends did not get the chance of completion.”

Sometimes, when memory weight grows heavy, they think about small things.

Like bright orange shoes that caught in a tree – evidence that life climbs, even in the darkest moments.

“We have found a renewed sense of goal,” Ozir said. “I realized that the time has come to accept the past and move to the future.”
