A Peek into the Past: The 1886 Earthquake – The Stanly News & Press

Nearly 134 years ago, in late August of 1886, what is often considered the strongest earthquake on the east coast of the United States to strike Charleston, South Carolina.

Estimated that the earthquake was from 6.9 to 7.3 on the Richter scale, it devastated much of Charleston and was felt as far away as Boston in the northeast and cities along the Mississippi River.

According to some accounts at the time, people believed the cause of the earthquake was Florida’s slide away from the mainland into the sea.

A more local account of the earthquake was found on September 11, 1886, the Wadesboro Intelligence Service. He said, “The excitement in Stanley County because of the earthquake is tremendous, and many sinners who have long resisted spirit wrestling are seeking refuge in religion. Many firmly believe that the day of judgment is near.”
