Indonesia records more than 4000 earthquakes in August, says BMKG

Jakarta. Indonesia witnessed 4,071 earthquakes in August 2025, according to the BMKG.

Among the total, 21 earthquakes were higher than 5.0, while the remaining 4,050 was less than that threshold. Most of them were simple and went by the population.

“The earthquakes are below size 5.0, only a small number took control of the audience,” Dalayono said in a statement on Saturday. “From thousands of earthquakes, 90 felt, and three of them caused damage.”

The three devastating events included a 6.3 earthquake in Sari, Papua, on August 12; The size of 5.8 earthquake in POSO, central Sulawesi, on August 17; And the size of 4.7 earthquakes in Carwang, west of Java, on August 20.

Daruno urged the audience to rely only on official information, with warning against earthquake predictions.
