Sparta earthquake update: Over 500 buildings damaged

The Mayor of Sparta and Ghani County Emergency Management officials have provided an update on the damage reported since the August 9th earthquake.

SPARTA, North Carolina – Nine days have passed since a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the small town of Sparta, North Carolina, and emergency officials say the damage is worse than they initially thought.

The Mayor of Sparta, Wes Brennegar, along with other Ghani County officials, provided an update on recovery efforts on Tuesday.

In the aftermath of the initial 5.1-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 9, the US Geological Survey recorded 20 aftershocks in the area, officials said.

“People here are in tension, they have problems, they worry about every little rumble,” said Mayor Brennegar, but said fortunately there were no injuries.

A total of 525 buildings were damaged during the earthquake. Sixty buildings were considered severely damaged, meaning at least 40% of the structure was lost.

Officials said the Red Cross is helping 19 people who lost their homes.

Beringar thanked the local leaders, emergency officials and citizens for their hard work and resilience in the days following the earthquake.

He said, “We may be young, but our heart is big.” “My plea: help us if you can, and keep us in your thoughts and prayers.”

Brinegar warned of scammers trying to appear as construction workers roaming Sparta, offering to repair damages for $ 500 and then never showing up. He also warned that GoFundMe pages should try to get people to donate to the town or county of the rich. He said that neither the town of Sparta nor the Ghanaian county are requesting donations through the GoFundMe page.

Brennagar said those who wish to help with recovery efforts can do so by donating to the American Red Cross. He said donors should determine their willingness to direct their funds for earthquake relief in Al Afghani province.

The county is hoping to receive state funds to help with repairs and rebuilding. Practically no one has earthquake insurance.

“It looks promising at the moment, but we don’t know until we get the seal of approval,” said emergency management coordinator Daniel Rotten.

Rutten said that the “seal of approval” might come in the next week or two, but that rebuilding homes and businesses would take months.

He continued, “Some of the worst damage to our workplace.” “I know there is one facility, the damage of which is estimated at more than 300,000 dollars.”
