After the Karmian earthquake, women's health programs offer a long -term response to the long -term response
Written by Talia Maires
When a huge earthquake reached 7.8 people in KahramanMaraåÿ, Türkiye, in February 2023, you are concerned about women's health.
Kä ± lä ± ã§, a professor of public health at Dokuz Eylul University in Turkey and the head of the Public Health Specialists Association, known as Hasuder, explained that mother and reproductive health is often overlooked in the aftermath of disasters – as is the case in the increasing risks of sexual disagreement, the problems of star women, and sexual breastfeeding.
The 2023 earthquake was killed more than 59,000 people in Türkiye and Syria, and they explained up to 3 million, and many of them are already refugees from Syria. The earthquake caused damage and displacement across 11 Turkish provinces, which were more challenging for women and children. In the difficult Hatay Province alone, more than 200 containers, containers and other temporary settlements were created to house hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
He said that the lack of women's health care “was a very big and dangerous problem in the camps.”
More than two years after the earthquake, Hasuder found that women's health needs are still not satisfied. Women and girls in temporary settlements compare the increase in violence, whether from family members or strangers. Unhealthy conditions, clean toilets and bathing increased urinary tract and vaginal infections. These women and girls who are displaced are likely to be forced to marry, experience unintended pregnancy in unsafe conditions, and to contract sexually transmitted infections.
Closed primary care centers and health facilities for mothers have made it difficult to obtain prenatal care and birth safely, which greatly increases the risk of mothers and children. (While Hasuder estimates that the areas affected by the earthquake can expect to see about 20,000 births per month, the current health care capacity is much lower.)
The organization places it frankly: “The disaster has a gender.”
To meet the health needs of women in the wake of the 2023 earthquake, direct relief granted grants to Hasuder and the Turkish Health and Planning Corporation, or TAPV: more than $ 655,000 to Hasuder and $ 375,000 for TAPV. For more than two years, these organizations have continued to provide mobile women's health services, referrals, communication with society and education in displacement camps, container settlements, and other affected societies. Today, they focus on increasing their ability and training in responding to future emergency situations.
Hasuder and TAPV provided a wide range of services, from education on vaccines and birth control and hygiene to cancer and hospitals shows for pregnancy at risk. Both organizations have provided services in Turkish and Arabic, making access to refugee patients.
By working with local partners and authorities, surveying affected societies to determine the needs and approach, and develop flexible strategies to help women effectively reach care, they provide basic models for a long -term approach to meet health needs after a disaster.
Hasuder has provided sexual and reproductive health care services to more than 7,200 women affected by the earthquake in Hatay Province for 18 months. TAPV has provided healthcare services, referrals and education to more than 8,400 women – through home visits, cancer examination, family planning, and more than ten months.
For TAPV health care workers, mobile health services and hospitals were for women who were fine or suffering from high -risk pregnancies were high priorities. The highest mind was the concentration groups and in -depth conversations with women in the affected societies about the services available to them.
One patient was referred to the presence of a mass in her chest during a self -examination to a cancer treatment center, where a high -risk mass was discovered, and was able to undergo treatment. Many women who suffer from high -risk pregnancy have not searched for health care for mothers, but they were ready to receive health care services after receiving advice from TAPV members.
A number of women who live in container cities, who have been interviewed about their experiences with TAPV, described learning about critical health services. These examinations include cancerous, and their knowledge of family planning, preventing sexual intercourse infections, and understanding the importance of prenatal care and vaccines for their newborn baby. Women whose husbands were eager and preventing access to contraceptives from being accessed by working with reproductive health advisor.
“After the earthquake, we have already forgotten this information.” “More precisely, we have forgotten ourselves as women” We have forgotten how difficult women are. Through this project, we are aware of this again. “
Nurcan Mã¼ftã¼oälu, CEO of TAPV, explained that many of the issues in which health care teams worked to solve are rooted in culture, which do not give priority to sexual and reproductive health for women. Women's health needs, which are already likely to be ignored in disasters, are more likely to be ignored more than others in situations that have not already been high priority.
Many women who have received TAPV are Syrian refugees, who have shown that Mã¼to¼lu is already explaining and frequenting access to health services. Often, the transportation to health facilities, even for quarrels to reach them, was not present, so TAPV worked to arrange transportation services for women who need to examine cancer or any other care based on the facility. Many primary care facilities were severely damaged or simply closed.
“These are more reasons for developing crises,” Mã¼To¼lu said.
Hasuder nurses noted that forced marriage for girls is not less than 16 years old – and even younger among the refugee population – is an increasing problem in the areas affected by the earthquake because schools are closed. “The girl is seen as a surplus in the family,” a report of the nursing staff explained. Many men do not allow their wives to use contraceptives, or deny their medical treatments for their wives that they worry them may harm the kidneys or cause weight gain. Wrong information is widespread, violence against women is a widespread problem.
Kä ± lä ± 㧠The woman's health needs that his portable teams that she faced were huge, starting with lack of underwear, healthy pillows and clean facilities for more complicated issues such as mother's health and sex -based violence.
He said that building confidence was a high priority. About two years ago, when Hasuder teams began providing travel clinics in mobile medical units, it was difficult to persuade many women to reach health services or discuss intimate issues such as contraceptives and hygiene.
Then things changed.
“After a few months, we noticed that in every camp, there is a leading woman,” he remembers Kä ± lä ã carry. (The leaders of the informal community are a common presence in the places of refugees, where people appoint their trusted community members to defend their interests, build vital relations, and inform them of those who believe in confidence.) The Hasuder team started cultivating relations with these leaders of society, and contacting them before driving to the camp site to allow them to know the services that will be available, answer questions, and leadership.
Quickly, Kä said ± lä ± ã§, they started seeing hundreds of women every month.
“Every woman [leader] He said, “In every camp, we started contacting our team, they were asking,” When will you come again? “
