Two members of the House of Representatives in Oregon are pressured to increase the financing of tsunami and earthquakes.

During a hearing on Monday of the Interim Committee in the House of Representatives on the Emergency Department and Old Warriors, Representatives David Gomberg and Paul Evans said that Oregon's lack of preparation showed during the Tsunami consultations in July. Evans agreed, noting that people may not receive an emergency message because their phone is suspended or they do not hear a tsunami siren.

He said: “Three hundred million dollars over 10 years to build satellite training facilities to ensure that our people are full-time-but more importantly, that volunteer people and part-time response have the ability to maintain their skills at the top of the range, instead of having to rely on the delivery system now that are difficult to do so.”

The two acknowledged that such investments were difficult at a time when the state recently dealt with a budget crisis and recently held a special session to increase transport financing taxes.

Gomberg, in particular, noticed spending on elements such as education, health care and housing.

“We need to address these immediate concerns at the expense of things that exceed the horizon,” Gomberg said.

“The dollars that we invest in these programs, we do not invest in the dollar that we invest in preparing for the worst natural disaster America ever. It is not difficult to count to 250 to 300,000 victims in the first week if we are not ready.”

Evans said that the state of Oregon has not witnessed a major earthquake and a taguname since 1700, and the geologists warn that major seismic events occur every 300 years.

When asked about the possible ways to finance his request, he indicated a proposal that he said was in the legislative session in the last session known as a 4 % discount.
