Fresno's bread and butter donate sales to help the Filipino earthquake victims

Fresno, California (KFSN) – Recovery efforts are being made in the Philippines after a strong earthquake of 6.9 on Tuesday, killing at least 72 people and wounding more than 360.

In Fresno, members of the Philippine society are mobilizing to help the affected, including bread and butter, a famous bakery in northeastern Fresno.

Chef Mark and Jam, who were originally from Sibu, one of the affected islands, says that the catastrophe that strikes close to the house.

“When you see the pictures now on social media, the reality exists. It faces you, and we feel its size,” Jam said.

The couple immediately called their loved ones in Sibu, who were unharmed but shaken. Many were forced to sleep outside due to fears of subsequent tremors and structural damage.

“It is the heart of the heart,” said Jam. “Most members of our family and friends are the elderly, so we want to make sure that they are safe.”

The earthquake center was near the town of Bugo, where a 300 -year -old church collapsed. The houses were destroyed, and the landslides were added to the destruction.

“It was the night. People slept when that happened,” said Jam.

To support relief efforts, bread and butter donate by 30 % of all sales of the earthquake box. The donations continue until October 11, and coincides with Fil Fiesta 559, an event that celebrates the Philippine companies and culture.

“This is the spirit of the Filipinos,” said Jam. “We gather, not only in happiness, but in the tragedy.”

The returns will go to organizations that provide food, water and other affected necessities.

On Saturday, starting from the back, Chef Mark and Jam will host either out of their bakery, and offer traditional Filipino dishes to sell. Thirty percent of all sales will go directly to relief from the earthquake.
