Whether fur or iron, Indiana University mascots from campuses across the state came together to demonstrate how to “fall, cover and hold on” in the event of an earthquake as part of World Aftershock Day on Oct. 16.
“Believe it or not, earthquakes can happen in Indiana,” said Amanda Roach, IU director of emergency management and continuity for public safety. “Being prepared when you start to feel the shake can help increase your safety. We hope everyone will join our characters to drop, cover and stabilize during this year’s international Great ShakeOut exercise.”
On October 16, at 10:16 a.m. (local time), people around the world will practice earthquake safety measures.
Earthquake safety tips:
Drop to the floor under a sturdy desk or table, if possible. Cover your head and face with your arms. Stick to sturdy furniture. Avoid windows, bookcases, mirrors, or shelves that could fall on you. Do not use elevators.
If you are outside, move to an open area away from trees, buildings and power lines. Stop if you are driving and stay inside your car until the shaking stops.
