An earthquake shakes a city in the northern Philippines

MANILA (Reuters) – A moderately strong earthquake struck on Thursday (October 9) near a mountainous city in the northern Philippines populated by hundreds of thousands of people, forcing people to abandon buildings and close schools, officials said.

Employees rushed out of office buildings in the city with a population of 366,000 after the quake struck at 10:30 a.m. (2:30 GMT), ten days after a powerful earthquake killed more than 70 people in the central Philippines, residents told AFP by phone.

“We will check the damage,” building manager Ralph Kabwag told AFP, as more than 300 employees and patients emerged from the three-story Baguio City Health Office.

The government seismological office had previously put the quake's strength at 4.8, and said it “expects damage,” but later lowered the figure to 4.4.

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong closed the city's elementary and high schools, the city's Public Information Office said on its Facebook page.

The government seismological office said the epicenter of the quake was located in the town of Bogo, near Baguio.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake in July 1990 killed about 1,600 people in and around Baguio, a city located atop a mountain range that is also one of the country's top tourist attractions.

Earthquakes occur almost daily in the Philippines, which lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity that extends from Japan across Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.

Also on Thursday, the government raised the death toll from the Cebu earthquake to 74, and two new deaths were reported in the cities of Medellin and Tabogon on Cebu Island.

Disaster officials said the quake destroyed or damaged about 72,000 homes and injured 1,058 people.
