A 7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes the southern Philippines
Manila – A strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the southern Philippines this morning (10th), with tsunami warnings issued in several countries, and people in nearby coastal areas urged to move to higher areas, the Philippine Seismological Agency said.
Phivolcs warned of aftershocks from the strong earthquake that occurred in the waters off Manai town in Davao Oriental in the Mindanao region.
Civil defense official Rafi Alejandro said on Facebook that at least one person was killed.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued an update around 12 noon local time saying the tsunami threat in the Philippines had passed, after earlier saying waves between one and three meters high were likely. But warnings from other agencies remained.
There were no other reports of casualties from disaster offices in the area contacted by Reuters. A Manai official said there were initial reports of damage to homes, buildings and bridges.
The quake was among the strongest to hit the Philippines in recent years, which lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and experiences more than 800 earthquakes every year.
The tsunami warning system in the United States issued a tsunami threat immediately after the quake, saying that dangerous tsunami waves were likely to occur on coasts located 300 kilometers from the epicenter.
The earthquake came two weeks after the earthquake
The Philippines witnessed the deadliest earthquake
In more than a decade, 72 people were killed on Cebu Island.
It was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake and also struck offshore.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said authorities were assessing the situation on the ground, adding that search and rescue teams would be deployed when the situation was safe.
“We are working around the clock to ensure assistance reaches everyone who needs it,” Marcos said in a statement.
Richie DeWine, a disaster official in Manai, near the epicenter, said the quake lasted 30 to 40 seconds, and initial damage included some homes, a church facade, cracked roads and impassable bridges.
“We couldn't have stopped earlier,” Ms. DeWine said by phone. “I'm 46 years old now, and this is the strongest earthquake I've ever felt.”
“The damage is very significant,” she added.
The Phivolcs agency reduced the earthquake's magnitude from an initial reading of 7.6 to 7.4, and set the depth of the quake at 23 kilometers.

The Phivolcs Foundation reduced the earthquake's magnitude from an initial reading of 7.6 to 7.4, and set the depth of the earthquake at 23 kilometers.
A tsunami warning was issued in Indonesia for its northern regions in Sulawesi and Papua, and the Pacific Ocean Watch Authority said that some coasts in Indonesia and the Pacific island nation of Palau may see waves up to one meter high.
Video of the earthquake from the Philippine city of Davao posted on social media and verified by Reuters showed office workers clinging to their desks as structures made creaking sounds.
Another clip showed toppled tanks and evacuated workers gathering outside.
Jonathan Dolotina, a radio operator at the disaster office in the Philippine coastal city of Mati, said there were no immediate reports of casualties, and that authorities were examining the damaged school building.
Local lessons have been suspended and inspections are underway, but there were no immediate reports of damage, Sawsan Interino, a disaster official in Panay-Panai, 10 kilometers away, told DZMM.
The governor of Davao Oriental said some people panicked when the quake struck.
“Some buildings were reported to have sustained damage,” Mr. Edwin Jobahebe told DZMM. “It was very powerful.” Reuters
