Tsunami warnings after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines | World news

Tsunami warnings were issued in several countries after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines.

Its center was about 38 miles (62 kilometers) southeast of the town of Manai in the Mindanao region, and at a depth of 14 miles (22 kilometers).

Authorities in the Philippines said that at least two people were killed in the earthquake. They added that the two victims were from Mati City in Davao Oriental province.

He urged residents in nearby coastal areas to head inland or move to higher areas.

The US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves up to 1-3 meters high were likely in the area, and the warning also covers the Sulawesi and Papua regions of Indonesia.

However, both the PTWC and the Philippine Seismological Agency have now raised their alerts.

Provincial Governor Nelson Dayangirang Sr. told local media that at least two people died in destroyed homes, while disaster management official Richie DeWine told Reuters that the quake lasted between 30 and 40 seconds.

She added that there were reports of damage to homes, roads and bridges.

She said: “We could not have stopped early. I am now 46 years old, and this is the strongest earthquake I have ever felt. The damage is very great.”

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said that the authorities are assessing the situation on the ground.

He added, “Search, rescue and relief operations are already being prepared, and will be deployed as soon as it is safe.”

The president added: “We are working around the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it. Let us continue to take care of each other and pray for the safety of all our citizens.”

This earthquake is one of the strongest earthquakes to have struck the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean in recent years, an area that is exposed to more than 800 earthquakes annually.

The Philippines is still recovering from a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on September 30, the deadliest earthquake in more than a decade, which killed at least 74 people and displaced thousands, especially in Cebu province.

The archipelago is also exposed to about 20 hurricanes and storms annually.
