A 7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes the southern Philippines
MANILA – Two powerful earthquakes struck off the southern Philippines on October 10, killing at least seven people and issuing tsunami warnings.
The strongest quake, with a magnitude of 7.4, occurred about 20 kilometers off the town of Manai on the southern island of Mindanao before 10 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey.
A 6.7-magnitude aftershock rocked the same area about 10 hours later, one of dozens that followed the morning quake.
Both came 11 days later

It killed 75 people and injured more than 1,200 others in Cebu province in the central Philippines, according to official data.
Rescue official Kent Simeon from the town of Pantukan said three miners working in a tunnel to extract gold were killed when a shaft collapsed in the mountains west of Manai during the larger quake.
He added that one of the miners was recovered alive and several others were injured in the remote village of Jumayan.
“Some of the tunnels collapsed, but the miners managed to get out,” Simon said.
One person was killed in the city of Mati, the largest urban center near the epicenter, when a wall collapsed, while another suffered a fatal heart attack, officials said.
Another person was crushed by falling debris in Davao City, more than 100 kilometers west of the epicenter, police said.
Philippine authorities issued tsunami warnings shortly after the earthquake and ordered evacuations along the east coast.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center raised the alert for the Philippines, Palau and Indonesia around noon.
A video posted on social media and verified by Reuters showed residents in Davao City calmly clinging to parked cars that rocked from side to side as the ground shook and metal gates fell nearby.
Richie DeWine, a disaster official in Manai, near the epicenter, said the quake lasted 30 to 40 seconds, and initial damage included some homes, a church facade, cracked roads and impassable bridges.
“We could not have stopped earlier,” she said by phone. “I am now 46 years old, and this is the strongest earthquake I have ever felt.”
Ms. Wes Casey, an official in Tagum City, northwest of Manai, said a government event at city hall turned chaotic as attendees fled in panic. “They screamed and ran away,” she added.
Cassie confirmed the videos circulated on social media, and said she saw city workers scrambling over the metal Christmas tree they were decorating when the first quake struck.
Witnesses and officials said the quakes appeared to have caused minor damage, while PHIVOLCS – the agency that tracks earthquakes and volcanic eruptions – said it had recorded more than 300 aftershocks.
Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that authorities were assessing the situation on the ground, and that search and rescue teams would deploy as soon as the situation was safe. “We are working around the clock to ensure that assistance reaches everyone who needs it,” he said in a statement.
PHIVOLCS warned of aftershocks of up to 6.4 magnitude, and urged people in affected areas to stay away from the beach.
Earlier, residents of coastal areas were asked to move inland or seek higher ground.
Verified footage from the southern Philippines showed workers exiting buildings to congregate in the streets, lamps swaying in stores, offices with dropped cabinets and workers clinging to their desks as structures and fixtures around them creaked.
Video images from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi showed fishing boats returning from the sea, and children playing on the beach from which the water had receded.
The Phivolcs Foundation reduced the earthquake's magnitude from an initial reading of 7.6 to 7.4, and set the depth of the earthquake at 23 kilometers.
Davao del Norte Governor said some people panicked when the earthquake struck.
“Some buildings were reported to have sustained damage,” Mr. Edwin Jobahebe told DZMM. “It was very powerful.” Reuters, AFP
