Samaritan's Purse Response After Deadly Philippines Earthquake
A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Cebu City, Philippines, in late September, displacing tens of thousands of Filipinos. Residents suffer from thousands of aftershocks and lack of food, water and shelter.
Our team is working on the ground with partner churches to meet urgent needs for water, food and shelter.
Samaritan's Purse's Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), working with church partners, is responding to needs on Cebu Island in the Philippines where a 6.9-magnitude earthquake shook communities in the overnight hours of September 30.
Samaritan's Purse works through partner churches to provide families with clean water, food supplies and shelter materials.
Many families are still sleeping outside their damaged homes for fear of further danger amid thousands of aftershocks, some of which reached 5.2 magnitude.
We serve areas in the northern part of the island in the municipalities of Bogo, Tabogon, and San Remigio, and work through dozens of local churches associated with Samaritan's Purse through Operation Christmas Child.
Samaritan's Purse has already distributed food to more than 1,000 families, along with water supplies. We also provided more than 400 shelter kits, including tarps, ropes and sleeping mats. An additional 1,900 shelter kits, 1,000 food kits, and 2,000 hygiene kits are being prepared for distribution in the coming days. We also provide shade tents to affected churches to build temporary shelter space for services and ministry activities.
“This has been one of the scariest events of people's lives,” said Warren West, Samaritan's Purse's regional director for Asia. “They are experiencing four to five strong aftershocks a day – it feels like a bomb shakes the ground every time one of them happens. A lot of church buildings have been damaged, but they are still coming together and providing pastoral service.”
“These churches know their communities and local officials. They are eyes and ears on the ground.”
Over the past decade, Samaritan's Purse staff have trained numerous church partners in the Philippines to respond during crises with physical assistance and spiritual support. In various communities, these same churches have become relief centers, hosting tent gatherings, offering trauma counseling, and offering encouragement from God's Word to affected families.
Church leader Jim Sarkos, an area native and member of the Operation Christmas for Children leadership team in his area, said he and his wife spent several nights after the quake sleeping in the car.
“After the shaking, there was no light at all. I was in my office. My wife was in her room. We had just finished a call with the staff. Suddenly, something fell. The floor shook,” Sarkos said. “I shook for at least a minute. My first thought was to go to my wife. When I heard our things falling, I said, 'Let's go.'”
Volunteers from local churches are collecting supplies and food to help thousands of people in Jesus' name.
Adding to the chaos was the tragic news that a woman from his church had been killed by falling debris — among more than 70 confirmed deaths.
But fear did not prevent his church from seeing the opportunity that God opened for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
“We are grateful that even though all of these things are happening, we have the opportunity to serve,” Sarkos said. “Our networks are there, even though they are struggling too, ready to serve families and grateful for the opportunity to serve their people and their community. Communities are greatly encouraged by the presence of Samaritan's Purse and our churches.”
As we continue to respond to needs in the Philippines, please continue to pray. This story will be updated with more information as it becomes available.

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history.
