Death toll in Manai and Davao Oriental earthquakes rises to 8 – NDRRMC

The death toll from back-to-back earthquakes that struck Manai in Davao Oriental on Friday has risen to eight, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday morning.

All deaths were reported in Davao and Caraga region. All of them are still subject to verification, according to the latest NDRRMC status report released at 6 am

The number of infected people currently stands at 395, while no missing persons have been reported.

A total of 32 road sections and 7 bridges were affected by the earthquakes.

Of this infrastructure, 5 sections of roads and 3 bridges remain impassable.

In an online press conference on Sunday afternoon, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said nearly P27 million worth of assistance had been provided to affected residents in the Davao and Caraga region.

The Ministry of Social Welfare and Development said it distributed 24,358 family food packages, at least 3,600 ready-to-eat foods, and about 2,500 non-food items.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health is moving patients and staff at the damaged hospital in Manai, Davao Oriental to another building for safety.

Comprehensive plan

OCD Deputy Director Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office plans to formulate a comprehensive plan to educate the public about earthquakes.

“We really need to strengthen our information and education and convulsions like an earthquake,” Alejandro said.
