Arkansas residents are preparing to head out Oct. 16 for earthquake preparedness drills

No one can predict when and where an earthquake will strike, only the area where the earthquake is likely to occur.

But at 10:16 a.m. on Oct. 16, more than 24,000 Arkansas residents plan to pretend like an event is happening.

Along with 16.3 million participants worldwide, they will participate in the annual International ShakeOut Day, the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management announced Wednesday.

The timed event is an effort to “enhance earthquake preparedness and ensure communities know how to respond quickly and safely when the ground begins to shake,” according to a press release.

When the clock strikes 10:16, participants will do a simple exercise wherever they are: drop, cover, and hold.

Proper instructions, depending on the location of the earthquake: Get on your hands and knees to avoid the risk of falling or being struck by falling debris. Then cover your head and neck with one arm and one hand.

If there is a sturdy table or desk nearby, crawl under it for shelter. If that's not an option, crawl next to an interior wall.

If you are under shelter, hold it with one hand and be ready to move it if it moves.

According to the Division of Emergency Management, more than 2.2 million people across the central United States will participate in Operation ShakeOut in 2024.

The ShakeOut website indicates that approximately 52 million participants are registered for the event.

In Arkansas, a few dozen schools have signed up to participate, including McDermott Elementary in Little Rock, Pulaski Heights Elementary and Pulaski Heights Middle School.

Arkansas is at risk for a major earthquake due to its proximity to the New Madrid Fault in the eastern part of the state that runs from Cairo, Illinois, to Marked Tree, according to the Arkansas Office of State Geologist.

According to the Department of Emergency Management, the fault line has a “high chance” of causing an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 or higher.

“It is important for residents, especially in east and central Arkansas, to have an earthquake emergency plan and know how to protect themselves in the event of a large earthquake,” the news release said.

Data from the Arkansas Office of State Geologist show that 42 earthquakes were detected in the state in 2024 from January to July.

The largest earthquake, with a magnitude of 2.8, was detected near Deal in Mississippi County.

Arkansas has recorded 36 seismic events this year, the largest of which was a 3.1 magnitude event southwest of Blytheville, the state geology office said.
