The Great Oregon ShakeOut, a statewide international earthquake preparedness exercise, is scheduled for Oct. 16.

The one-minute drill at 10:16 a.m. encourages Oregonians to practice and prepare for the proper earthquake response: “Low, cover, wait.”

The Great Oregon ShakeOut event is held on the third Thursday of every October. This event comes within the framework of global earthquake training. Participants pledge to practice earthquake safety by dropping, covering and holding on wherever they are and whatever they are doing.

More than 570,000 people, organizations and businesses have registered to participate in the 2025 ShakeOut.

“Operation ShakeOut is more than just training — it's a reminder that preparedness saves lives,” Erin McMahon, Oregon Emergency Management Director, said in a news release. “By training together, we are less likely to panic in the moment. I believe activities like ShakeOut and Camp-In create a culture of resilience that strengthens our communities and helps us respond more effectively when disasters strike.”

October 16-19 was recognized by Governor Tina Kotick in a proclamation as a statewide earthquake preparedness time. The Great Oregon ShakeOut follows the Great Oregon Camp-In Oct. 17-19, which encourages Oregonians to simulate life after a major disaster.

Oregon lies along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 700-mile-long fault that runs from northern California to British Columbia. The last known earthquake on the fault was in 1700 and had a magnitude of 9.0. Evidence suggests that Oregon has the potential for another earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or greater.

Scientists expect there is about a 37% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 or greater occurring within the next 50 years, as pressure in the fault has been building since the 1700 earthquake.

Oregon residents can expect to be without services for at least two weeks, according to OEM, if such an earthquake occurs.

During an earthquake, you should:

Get down on your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck and crawl under a desk or table, if nearby. Wait until the shaking stops.
