Drop, cover and hold on: Great British Columbia ShakeOut urges earthquake preparedness

ShakeOut BC is one of the key initiatives to encourage organizations, communities, schools and individuals to practice “drop, cover and wait” steps in the event of an earthquake, and enhance preparedness.

“So, we have a 12-day, two-week supply of water and food, all those great things that we should have in our emergency kits at home.”

Besides the basics, Yamamoto encourages providing comfort items in the earthquake box, such as chocolates, family photos and stuffed animals to help with emotional comfort along with physical comfort. A contact list with phone numbers for family and friends to message after an earthquake is also a proactive step.

However, not all British Columbians are prepared for a major earthquake, like the long-awaited major quake that experts say will wreak devastation in the Pacific Northwest.

General contractor Pedro Campos says he learned about earthquake preparedness through popular culture, including movies depicting earthquakes.

“For example, position yourself under tables or under a door frame,” Campos said.

But those who know this say that this is not entirely true. Yamamoto says it is not recommended to seek shelter under doorways, because they are no longer the strongest part of the building, and in the event of a strong earthquake, an individual could fall to the ground.

Campos said that although his family does not have an earthquake preparedness box, they do have a first aid kit as well as some canned food and water.

British Columbia lies on three tectonic plates: the North American, Juan de Fuca, and Pacific plates that form part of the Cascadia subduction zone. Plates are constantly moving and cause an earthquake when they collide, move apart, or move close to each other.

Beyond enhancing preparedness, BCEA works to ensure everyone has access to vital resources. A key priority for BCEA is its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, working with underserved communities to ensure earthquake and tsunami preparedness.

Yamamoto says these initiatives included people with disabilities, whose first language is not English, and remote indigenous communities who could all be affected by a major earthquake.

As British Columbians prepare to “drop in, cover up and hold on” on Thursday, Yamamoto hopes ShakeOut will serve as a reminder to be prepared.
