News Format and Press Release Source Published October 15, 2025 Originally Published October 15, 2025 Origin View Original On October 11, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck northern Ethiopia, causing damage to homes and public infrastructure in the Afar and Tigray regions. In the Berhali region (Afar), the earthquake reportedly killed a 12-year-old boy and injured nine people. More than 1,400 homes and 12 public facilities, including schools and health centres, were reportedly damaged, as well as more than 150 water sources, leaving families without access to water. Overall, an estimated 43,000 people in five villages are affected and need assistance, according to local authorities. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs plans to join the verification team sent to the region on October 15. Likewise, the earthquake in Tigray affected several regions, including the regional capital, Mekele. According to Disaster Risk Management Office officials, the quake damaged 40 houses and completely destroyed five houses, affecting about 225 people. Aftershocks have been reported, adding risks to already threatened structures and increasing community vulnerability. The Rapid Response Mechanism has been activated in Ethiopia with co-funding from the European Community Humanitarian Aid Directorate-General (ECHO) to respond to emergency needs.
