Latter-day Saints affected after the second major earthquake in the Philippines – Church News

Just over a week after a powerful earthquake devastated Cebu City and neighboring provinces, another powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippines – this time off the coast of Manai, in Davao Oriental, in Mindanao.

On October 10, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, followed by nearly 300 aftershocks, the strongest reaching a magnitude of 5.8. The tremor was felt in most parts of Mindanao, leading to temporary evacuations and power outages in several provinces.

Missionaries and members are safe

Area leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints assured that all full-time missionaries serving in Mindanao are safe and accounted for. Three missionaries' apartments suffered cracks during the strong earthquakes but were cleared for further use after inspection.

Many church members were directly affected by the earthquake, although no injuries or deaths among Latter-day Saints were reported.

While most residents have since returned to their homes, some families — including families of other faiths — have sought refuge in Latter-day Saint meetinghouses. These churches, which now serve as temporary evacuation centers, provide a safe place to sleep and provide access to food and clean water, according to a social media post from the Philippine Newsroom.

Local communities quickly organized to care for the displaced. Volunteers prepared and distributed hot meals and other urgent necessities.

The Mindanao earthquake comes just days after Latter-day Saints in the Visayas region began major relief operations following the October 2 Cebu earthquake that claimed dozens of lives. Despite successive disasters, church members across the Philippines rallied in faith, unity and service.
