Practice earthquake safety with CBC

With three recent earthquakes in locations across the province in September, earthquake preparedness is – or should be – on the minds of British Columbians. From Haida Gwaii to Fort St. John to Maple Ridge, people in each of these areas felt the distinct and uncomfortable rumble that accompanies a nearby earthquake.

For this reason and more, it is very important that we all know how to be safe if the ground shakes.

Prepare through practice

One way we can all prepare ourselves for a serious earthquake is through practice, such as participating in this year's Great British Columbia ShakeOut at 10:16 a.m. on October 16.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to tune in to CBC Radio One to take part in the ShakeOut exercise and practice how to stay safe if the ground shakes – no matter where you are, and follow expert advice to lie down, cover and hold still.

In this latest video, part of a curated list of earthquake-related stories, CBC science expert Johanna Wagstaff explains why emergency preparedness experts consistently say the safest thing to do is to adopt this three-step approach if we're hit by an earthquake.
