It's time to talk about earthquakes.

This was the focus of Thursday's major Washington shake-up.

The annual event focuses on preparing people to face an earthquake and practicing safety during an active earthquake.

At 10:16 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, millions of people participated in earthquake drills at work, school or in their homes across the country.

Number of seconds

Washington has a ShakeAlert early warning system, which launched in 2021. Washingtonians can get notifications on their phones when an earthquake is about to strike.

Unlike weather, scientists cannot predict when earthquakes will occur long in advance. However, sensors can detect the first quake sounds below the surface before people feel the shaking. It's those crucial seconds of warning time that can save lives.

KOMO News Meteorologist George Waldenberger spoke with the folks at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network about the sensors used to generate alerts when an earthquake strikes.

Hundreds of sensors constantly monitor ground activity for any movement. The data processing center analyzes those seismic waves to calculate where the earthquake occurred and how strong it was. If the stations detect a large earthquake, computers at the University of Washington Seismic Laboratory run an algorithm that can send an alert within 4 to 8 seconds.

There are more than 700 sensors throughout Washington state.

“A few seconds can be everything depending on what you're doing — you can get off the ladder, prepare to fall, cover, hang on,” Waldenberger said.
