A small earthquake hits the Bay Area shortly before annual earthquake drills

It's Big Aftershock Day in California, and while preparations are being made for the annual earthquake drill, a 3.1-meter earthquake strikes near Berkeley.

On Thursday morning at 9:23 a.m., an earthquake struck beneath the East Bay, centered about a mile east of Berkeley, measuring 3.1, and about four miles deep. The earthquake appears to have occurred on the Hayward Fault.

I may have felt the vibration in San Francisco, even though I didn't feel it. The USGS has not yet updated the earthquake's shaking map.

The quake arrived just under an hour before the annual Great California ShakeOut drill, which was scheduled for 10:16 a.m. Thursday. If your MyShake app is activated, it should start working out at that time.

This coincidence clearly impressed an editor at The New York Times, because despite the minor nature of the earthquake, they chose a loud headline and a reactive article. According to the UC Berkeley Seismic Laboratory, the Hayward Fault currently carries the greatest potential risk to the Bay Area, with a 33% chance of rupturing in an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater before 2043.

The Gulf region overall has a 72% chance of seeing an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater before 2043, taking into account other fault systems.
