The Great California ShakeOut 2025 event aims to raise awareness and preparedness across SoCal today

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Millions of residents, students and office workers in Los Angeles and Orange counties and across the state practiced “drop, cover and hold” steps Thursday as part of the 17th annual Great California ShakeOut exercise aimed at boosting earthquake preparedness.

The training, designed to simulate the response to a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault, was developed to teach people what to do when a major earthquake strikes and ways to prepare for such a disaster.

“It's not a matter of if an earthquake of this size will happen, but when,” according to the ShakeOut website. “It could happen in our lifetime.”

Organizers of the annual event said that preparing for such a devastating earthquake is essential to reduce the loss of life and ensure that residents and families are prepared to respond to this event and deal with its effects.

“If we do not act today, there will be significant loss of life and property,” event organizers said. “ShakeOut was organized to help raise awareness as well as help Californians prepare for major earthquakes in our future.”

According to ShakeOut, more than 10.3 million Californians had registered to participate in the workouts as of Wednesday evening, including 3.4 million in Los Angeles County and 850,000 in Orange County. During last year's event, about 10.4 million people statewide registered to participate.

Training began in 2008.

Cities in Los Angeles and Orange counties have signed up to participate in the training, along with most major elementary and secondary school districts and universities.

According to ShakeOut.org, the goal is to emphasize precautions during an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 or larger along the southern portion of the San Andreas Fault.

Officials believe such a tectonic shift could produce at least two minutes of shaking motion waves hundreds of miles, over a period of four minutes. According to the US Geological Survey, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake would cause more than 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries, and more than $200 billion in damage, along with long-term disruption.

Californians should be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours after a major disaster, experts say. This includes having a first aid kit, medications, food, and enough water for each person in the family to drink one gallon per day.

Homeowners and renters should also know how to turn off the gas in their residences in the event of a leak.
