A 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook Berkeley Thursday morning, following an active cluster that caused four earthquakes in Berkeley last month.

The epicenter of Thursday's quake was under UC Berkeley's Calvin Laboratory, located off Piedmont Avenue between Berkeley's Haas School of Business and Law.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake was recorded at 9:23 a.m. at a depth of 5.6 miles.

It's a “little rumble,” one person wrote on Reddit.

Another wrote: “I wasn't sure if it was an earthquake or a big truck passing by.”

The governor's office said in a prepared statement that the quake coincided with California's “Major Earthquake,” which is observed every year on Oct. 16 “on the anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.” “This 6.9 magnitude earthquake killed 63 people, injured and displaced thousands, and caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure.”

To promote Thursday's event, UC Berkeley held a preparedness fair on campus, featuring “adorable animals and lots of toys as well as demonstrations and giveaways to help fill those emergency kits.”

Authorities also took the opportunity Thursday to remind people to download the MyShake app (for iPhone and Android), which “provides Californians with up to 30 seconds of warning in the event of a M4.5 or higher earthquake.”
