Survivors of the August 31 earthquake that struck the eastern province of Kunar say they are still living in tents, receiving little aid, and fearing the coming winter.

They say humanitarian aid has been slow or absent, despite the extent of the devastation. Many families say they have only received temporary tents, and are calling on Taliban authorities and international relief agencies to help rebuild their homes.

“We live in these tents, but we struggle even to find bread,” said Rabajan, a mother of two who was injured with her son during the earthquake. “We can't afford anything from the market.”

Parts of Kunar and neighboring Nangarhar province still show signs of devastation, with homes collapsing and families displaced. Survivors say no one follows them up or provides them with ongoing support.

“We have no shelter and no supplies,” said Syed Qadim, a resident of Kunar. “Some organizations had promised to help earlier, but now no one has come.”

Another resident, Samiullah, appealed for immediate shelter and reconstruction support. “We need help with tents and houses. Winter is coming – living in a tent is not possible.”

The United Nations has warned that thousands of children in eastern Afghanistan are at risk of deadly disease outbreaks after health and sanitation infrastructure was destroyed by the earthquake.

The United Nations said in a statement that urgent action is needed to prevent a public health crisis in the affected areas.

A series of earthquakes struck eastern Afghanistan earlier this year, especially in September, causing widespread destruction and hundreds of deaths. In Kunar Province, some families lost more than 10 members in the disaster.

Relief efforts in Afghanistan continue to be hampered by political instability, limited international funding, and logistical challenges after the Taliban returns to power in 2021.
