The 2010 Haiti earthquake survivor who rebuilt her life in San Antonio has died

SAN ANTONIO – Bethley Paul, who was pulled from the rubble of the 2010 Haiti earthquake and later flown to San Antonio to recover, has died after complications from a long-term health condition. She was 25 years old.

KSAT chronicled Paul's journey from Haiti to San Antonio. Upon arriving in San Antonio, she and her sister spent two months at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital, now CHRISTUS Children's Hospital.

Paul later lived with former KSAT broadcaster Steve Sprester and his family. The 10-year-old and her sister underwent several surgeries while recovering in San Antonio.

During her recovery, Paul was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease lupus. The diagnosis allowed Paul's mother to receive parole on compassionate grounds and then obtain resident alien status in the United States while her daughter received treatment.

After two years of recovery and almost losing his leg, Paul was not only able to walk again; She was running.

“It's hard to believe Bethley's leg is completely healed,” Spreister wrote in 2012. “She even ran a 5K last month with our school Girls on the Run/Girls on Track team.”

Even though she was living in Texas, Paul still thought about Haiti and how she could help them recover. In 2016, she led a fundraising effort to help children in Haiti get the supplies they need to learn.

“I gotta go help the school, and I gotta help build it back up,” Paul told KSAT in 2016. “All I gotta do is change someone else’s life.”

During more than a decade of living in the United States, Paul developed into a spirited and adventurous woman. After high school, she spent time working as a flight attendant. She later spent time at San Antonio College and the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she studied psychology.

In 2022, Ball took another big step in her life: becoming a US citizen.

“I'm Beatley. I'm Haitian. I'm American. I'm silly. I'm corny. I'm a person who just loves other people,” Paul said in 2022.

Paul died on October 12, surrounded by friends and family.

“She overcame a lot in her young life and never complained,” Sprester said. “I will always carry the memory of her determination to face challenges head-on and her wonderful smile with me.”
