An earthquake has been confirmed in Hunterdon County, New Jersey

The US Geological Survey confirmed that a small earthquake struck New Jersey on Monday.

The US Geological Survey said a 1.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded around 2:46 p.m. northeast of Califon in Hunterdon County.

The federal agency reported that at least eight people felt the quake.

This latest quake comes on the heels of a pair of stronger earthquakes that rocked the Garden State in August. A 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck Hillsdale on Aug. 5, days after a 3.0-magnitude quake struck Hasbrouck Heights in Bergen County.

The last three earthquakes are all considered weak on the 1-9 Richter scale, with 9 being the strongest.

While New Jersey is not a hotbed of seismic activity like California or Japan, an active fault line runs through the north-central part of the state. The Ramapo Fault produces several earthquakes, usually small, each year. Many of them go unnoticed outside their stations.

On April 4, 2024, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Tewksbury, New Jersey was felt by about 42 million people across the East Coast. The second-strongest earthquake in state history triggered hundreds of aftershocks for weeks, including a 3.7-magnitude earthquake an hour later.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded in New Jersey occurred on November 29, 1783, with a magnitude of 5.3.
