A small earthquake shakes the cities of New Jersey

A small earthquake shook part of north-central New Jersey Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 1.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:46 p.m. and was centered about 1.2 miles east-northeast of Califon in Hunterdon County and was felt in several counties.

The US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquake activity around the world, said the Hunterdon quake occurred about 3.1 miles underground.

A small earthquake caused minor tremors in the Hunterdon County area Monday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2025, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

As of late Monday afternoon, the agency had received only six reports from people who felt any shaking due to the quake. Four of those reports were from people in Califon, and two were from people in the Long Valley section of Washington Township in Morris County.

Later in the day, there were additional reports from people who felt minor tremors. Two were from Far Hills in Somerset County, one from Basking Ridge in Somerset County, one from Lebanon in Hunterdon County, one from Beverly in Burlington County and one from Nutley in Essex County.

Most people described it as a Level 3 earthquake, which is a weak tremor similar to vibrations from passing trucks.

Monday's quake was the first felt in New Jersey since Aug. 12, according to USGS records.
