Serving families shaken by earthquakes in the Philippines

Our church partner teams serve with joy as we distribute food, water and shelter supplies to communities.

Samaritan's Purse works through church partners to meet material needs and share the love of Jesus Christ after the deadly earthquake that struck Cebu Island.

Samaritans' Purse continues to provide assistance in the Philippines as communities recover from a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck on September 30.

We distribute supplies in buckets, which are useful for many other disaster applications.

Through our history of work in the Philippines – including children's ministry teams in our current Operation Christmas and previous projects in the country – we have strong partners in Cebu who are committed to sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In cooperation with local churches, we provide earthquake survivors with shelter, food and water. Filipino Christians also offer encouragement and comfort with God's love to hurting people.

To date, we have distributed hygiene kits to more than 1,800 families, provided more than 2,000 families with food and cooking supplies, and provided more than 2,700 families with shelter kits while they continue to live displaced from their homes in the rainy season.

Residents told stories of falling debris around them and narrow escapes in homes and businesses. They also expressed their gratitude for what God protected and provided for them.

One father recounted how God gave him a sign to return home from a nighttime spearfishing trip. After realizing his flashlight wasn't working and experiencing other equipment problems, he decided to return home to be with this family. The earthquake struck shortly after he arrived home, just in time to shield his pregnant wife and two children with his body as debris fell around them.

Teams design shelter kits that include tarps, ropes and other items to keep families dry and warm.

Thanks to our relief, the family was able to sleep and enjoy meals together in a field near their home, even as the monsoon rains intensified.

We helped a 12-year-old boy, providing food and water, who said he carried his younger brother from his home amid strong aftershocks shortly after the first quake. When the ground shook that night, they were home alone and asleep, startled by things falling and breaking in their house. The boy said he initially thought they were being robbed until he heard his neighbors shouting: “Earthquake!”

They and their neighbors were evacuated to higher areas after reports of a tsunami warning. He is so grateful for the groceries and other items we provided because it will help the entire family in the next few days as they try to figure out their situation.

These are just two of the many survivor stories shared with our team and partners as they provide assistance to affected communities. While DART continues to work alongside these many dedicated congregations to help communities in Cebu, aftershocks (now numbering in the thousands) continue to shake communities and damage already damaged buildings.
