A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hits the border area between Ecuador and Peru

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the border region between Ecuador and Peru, causing strong tremors in parts of southern Ecuador and northern Peru, according to officials.

Ecuador's seismological agency said the earthquake occurred at 7:05 p.m. local time on Tuesday at a depth of 83 kilometers (51 miles).

The epicenter of the earthquake was in El Oro province, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from Arenalas and 36 kilometers (23 miles) from the city of Machala.

Residents near the epicenter reported intense and long-lasting tremors, with tremors felt as far away as Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city, and in parts of northern Peru.
