BCHS participates in earthquake drills

In a way, it was like those from the Cold War era when students half a century ago were trained to hide and take shelter under their desks in the event of a nuclear bomb attack.

Last Thursday, Boulder City High School participated in a drill of a different kind but with the same dodge and cover – The Great Nevada ShakeOut.

“The Great Tremor is an important reminder that preparedness can save lives,” BCHS Director Amy Wagner said. “At Boulder City High School, safety is part of our culture. We practice safety drills every month because it's important that everyone knows what to do in an emergency. Participating in a statewide ShakeOut connects us with schools and communities across Nevada in a shared commitment to preparedness.”

According to information from Great Shakeout, “Federal, state and local emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations all agree that ‘drop, cover and wait’ is the appropriate measure to reduce injuries and deaths during earthquakes. ShakeOut is our opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes.”

According to a news release from Clark County, 666,000 Nevada residents were expected to participate in the event that occurred at 10:18 a.m., and of those, more than 500,000 were in Clark County.

“The Great ShakeOut is an important exercise to remind people how to protect themselves if you experience an earthquake,” Clark County Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian O'Neill, who oversees the Office of Emergency Management, said in the release. “Earthquakes can happen in our state and in Clark County. We encourage as many people as possible to participate in the drills either at home or at their workplace.”

The county reported that Nevada is one of the most seismically active states after California and Alaska. Officials say most quake-related injuries are caused by falling objects, broken glass, or tripping and falling when people try to evacuate.

The statement stated, “The best protection inside the home during an earthquake is to sit under heavy furniture such as a desk or table until the shaking stops, and to stay away from windows to avoid shattering the glass.” “If someone is in the car when the shaking starts, pull over to a clear place and avoid bridges, overpasses and power lines if possible.”

To reduce injuries caused by an earthquake, racks should be securely attached to the walls. Large and heavy items should be placed on the lower shelves. Do not hang heavy objects on the walls above beds or sofas and chairs where people sit.
