5.9 A strong earthquake hits Japan today: what we know

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck eastern Hokkaido in northern Japan early Saturday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Officials confirmed that there was no tsunami threat.

The agency said the earthquake occurred southeast of the Nemuru Peninsula at a depth of about 25 miles around 1:40 a.m. local time. It registered less than 5 on the Japanese earthquake intensity scale of 7 in parts of Hokkaido.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency issued an emergency alert at the time of the earthquake, and expected strong tremors in the area. The government established a liaison office in the Prime Minister's Office to coordinate the response.
