The moderate earthquake in the Black Sea was felt throughout Istanbul and neighboring provinces

Turkish authorities reported that a moderate-magnitude earthquake struck the Black Sea on Sunday evening, causing concern for a short period among residents of Istanbul and neighboring provinces.

The earthquake occurred at 7:44 pm local time and had a magnitude of 3.7, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority AFAD. The agency recorded the depth of the earthquake at 13.57 kilometers below the sea floor.

Kandilli Observatory, Turkey's earthquake research center, reported a slightly higher magnitude of 3.9 for the same event, at a depth of 11.2 kilometers. Discrepancy in measurements between the two institutions is common in earthquake monitoring.

The earthquake was widely felt in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, as well as in several surrounding provinces, causing temporary anxiety among residents.

Speaking on CNN Turk's live broadcast, seismologist Süleyman Bambale sought to reassure the public about the significance of the earthquake.

“There are many faults in the north. Earthquakes here are normal. This does not make much sense for Istanbul. Such earthquakes occur constantly,” Bambale said.

Experts attribute the widespread sensation to the depth of the quake

He attributed the prevailing perception of the earthquake to its depth. “Since the focal depth is fairly high, it is normal for it to be felt over a wide area. But it is not a large earthquake,” he explained.

Babal stressed that the area where the earthquake occurred does not pose a major seismic threat to Istanbul. “There is no fault line that could lead to a devastating earthquake. This is normal. There are faults coming from around Georgia and Zonguldak, but they appear north of Istanbul,” he said, adding: “There is no need to exaggerate this earthquake.”

The Black Sea region experiences regular seismic activity due to multiple fault lines running from Georgia through northern Türkiye. The Disaster and Emergency Management Administration (AFAD) maintains real-time earthquake monitoring across Turkey, publishing continuous updates on seismic events in provinces including Istanbul, Izmir, Malatya, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Duzce, Mugla, Tokat, Bingöl and Manisa.
