A strong earthquake shakes the Caribbean as Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaica – Weather – News

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has been detected off the coast of the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean Sea, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US Tsunami Warning System said the island currently faces no tsunami threat after the quake.

This comes as Hurricane Melissa intensifies into a Category 5 tropical storm and is set to hit the southeastern shores of Jamaica, which is preparing for the largest possible storm to hit the island in modern history.

Forecasters have warned that Jamaica will experience catastrophic flooding, multiple landslides and extensive damage to infrastructure.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday before passing through Cuba and the Bahamas until Wednesday.

The storm, which had sustained winds of 160 mph as it moved west at 3 mph, was spotted about 135 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 320 miles southwest of Guantanamo, Cuba, early Monday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The NHC warned residents “not to venture out of their safe haven” as “catastrophic flooding and numerous landslides are likely.”

“I want to urge Jamaicans to take this seriously,” added Desmond McKenzie, Vice-Chairman of Jamaica's Disaster Risk Management Board. “Don't gamble with Melissa. It's not a safe bet.”

Parts of eastern Jamaica could see up to 40 inches of rain, while western Haiti could receive up to 16 inches, the weather agency said.

Mandatory evacuations have been implemented for at least seven flood-prone communities in Jamaica as buses take people to safe shelters.

At least three people died in Haiti and a fourth person in the Dominican Republic, where another remains missing.
