An earthquake strikes western Türkiye and was felt by residents of Istanbul and Izmir

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A powerful earthquake shook western Turkey on Monday, causing at least three buildings damaged in an earlier quake to collapse, officials said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) stated that the epicenter of the earthquake, which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, was in the town of Sinderji in Balikesir Province. The earthquake struck at 22:48 local time (1948 GMT) at a depth of 5.99 kilometers (3.72 miles).

The earthquake, which was followed by several aftershocks, was felt by residents of Istanbul and the nearby provinces of Bursa, Manisa and Izmir.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that at least three unoccupied buildings and a two-storey shop collapsed in the Sindarci district. The structures had already been damaged in a previous earthquake.

The minister added that two people were hospitalized due to panic falls.

“So far, we have not identified any loss of life, but we are continuing our assessment,” Dojukan Koyuncu, director of Senderci district, told the state-run Anadolu Agency.

Habertürk TV reported that many people remained outside, too afraid to return to their homes.

In August, the Sunderji region was also hit by an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, killing one person and injuring dozens of others. Since then, the area around Elikesir has been subjected to smaller shocks.

Türkiye is located on top of major fault lines, and earthquakes are common.

In 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Türkiye and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of neighboring Syria.
