Earthquake shakes MD: Did you feel it?

RIVERSIDE, Md. – A 2.5 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Maryland Monday afternoon. The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was in Howard County, and no damage or injuries have been reported so far.

County officials posted shortly before 6 p.m.: “We have confirmed a 2.5 magnitude earthquake in Howard County in the Columbia/Savage region according to the USGS. Police and Fire are aware of the situation and are surveying any possible damage. Please call 911 only in case of an emergency.”

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.7 kilometers underground.

“That shaking/shaking you felt around 5:17 p.m.? It was a small earthquake, according to USGS_Quakes. There are no reports of damage or injuries at this point,” the Howard County Police Department said on X.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded in Maryland was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in the early afternoon of August 23, 2011, sending people fleeing their office buildings across the region wondering if a terrorist attack or something else had happened.

This earthquake, which lasted less than a minute, caused cracks in the foundations of houses.
